Šumava was an extremely attractive place for photographers in the times of the monarchy. It fulfilled romantic ideas of a wild and desolate forest with its centuries-old trees, ravines, moors and picturesque lakes. A closer look, however, revealed it to be full of life and human bustle. Timber was extensively mined, precious metals were sought, and the glass industry developed. Settlements and villages developed, picturesque castles and churches grew up. Pavel Scheufler's new book tells the story of this no longer existing world of the old Šumava.
