    Prague at the end of the monarchy still breathes the majesty of the old times, but it is already transforming into a modern metropolis. Wide boulevards are being built on the site of the Jewish quarter, modern bridges arch between the two banks, and the first steam train from Vienna arrives at the station. While not so long ago the Emperor and his guards were walking around, soon the Republic will be proclaimed and the Marian column in Old Town Square will crash with a crash on the pavement. These and other watershed moments, as well as the everyday lives of ordinary Prague citizens, are captured in the remarkable photographs in this book. More than 140 images were selected, edited and accompanied by texts by Pavel Scheufler, the owner of a family collection of old photographs. The book is not only a valuable testimony to the transformation of our capital city, but also a guide to reading photographs in such a way that we can hear the compelling stories they tell.
