Jaipur Rugs

Jaipur Rugs is unique in the Indian context. It is not a company that supplies anonymously to foreign manufacturers, but a purely family-run business that has been systematically building its own international brand of hand-woven rugs since 1978.Jaipur Rugs now has showrooms in London, Milan and Dubai, and renowned Western designers work for the company under the leadership of the artistic director and daughter of the founder Kawi.

Monika White, owner of Le Patio was lucky enough to meet the family years ago when she was invited to their headquarters in historic Jaipur. What is stunning is not only the production, the range of collections, colours, materials, but also the social and moral ethos of the company.

Jaipur Rugs was founded in 1978 by NK Chaudhary, who is often dubbed as the "Gandhi of the carpet industry". Like Gandhi, Chaudhary believed in the power of local production and self-determination, which led to him starting with just 9 artisans and 2 looms. Today, almost 45 years later, the company employs thousands of local artisans, most of whom are rural women. For women, commuting to work is virtually impossible and often culturally unacceptable, so it is ideal for them to participate in carpet production from home. Jaipur Rugs also offers its employees alternative training programs, regular health checkups, and opportunities for professional growth with a focus on management skills.

Not only are the carpets hand-woven, but the yarn itself is hand-spun on spinning wheels, still a symbol of the handicraft tradition in India since Gandhi. What makes the carpets unique is the combination of special traditional weaving techniques and the materials used, such as wool, silk, cotton, jute and recycled sari.
